Tech Problems Lead Me To Writing, But Do Not Fret My Beer Bloggin’ Ones It’s Time To Reveal All, Grab a Beer & Class Begins….Now

by Ilya Feynberg on November 28, 2010

This is the extent of my graphic design ability. I'm damn good huh ;)

Most of you are in “the know” as to what I’ve been up to as of late (well kind of). If you read that post below, you’ll see that I’ve been talking about moving over to a video format all together for some time now, and that the post below was supposed to be one of my last fully written posts…at least for a while.

But wait a tick, this isn’t a that you’re reading video (can you read video), it’s not a podcast, and it sure as shit isn’t being transmitted via mind waves to play via your head movies. So what deal right? Why I be playin’ you like that?

Well firstly know this; none of this was ever meant to be a marketing ploy or anything even remotely like that. It really was supposed to be a smooth transition over to video. While filming the first quick intro video a couple days ago my camera just stopped working. It pooped out on me with a zipping noise and it was no more. Still don’t know what’s wrong with it. Just like that, half way through filming what I still believe to be the sexiest video of any Beer Bloggin’ Bastard anywhere. Oh well…we’ll all find ways to move on.

So I’m saying hello to an old and very welcome friend. One that still makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, gives me the ability to divulge far more detailed information, and doesn’t require assistance from Billy Broas geek side.

The written word. The written post. The “typey typey” of my head movies on to a blank white screen.

Seriously though. Enough of that.

It’s time to get down to the nitty gritty, but with a beer in hand. In this case I’m going for a Powder House Winter Ale from Big Sky Brewing Company in Montana. Which happens to be pretty damn good by the way! More importantly, the “reveal” of where this blog is heading, why it’s heading there, and how it directly affects you…if you allow it to have an effect.

So Ilya, what the hell is it already? You’ve been blowing smoke out your ass for weeks now. Spit it out and get on with it already.

Ok.

There is one main direction in which this blog is now heading, and while it has been on my mind for some time, it’s only recently that I’ve become extremely fired up and passionate about this issue. And while the ideas started flowing well before then, it was the Beer Bloggers Conference in Boulder, Colorado a few weeks back that really got me  all hot and heavy about the following.

You see as I sat there through a lot of the speeches, spoke to a lot of bloggers, site owners, app. creators etc. I noticed a trend that had me pulling out my hair and thinking “really?….really!” or “where did you ever get that idea from?” or “who the hell ever told you that?” and “why do you believe that?”. And it’s really not a perception that I can blame most for. Most…not all.

What is it?

The “reality” and “idea” that your passion for beer either can’t, or has a next to nothing chance of providing you with any monetary compensation, bill paying, six pack or bomber buying abilities or any other compensation.

The idea that you should really just ignore that pestering thought of “I wish I could make some money off my passionate hard work and efforts” or FAR more importantly “I wish I could build a real leveraged business out of my love for something”.

You have no idea how much it drives me out of mind to know that many if not the vast majority are thinking things like:

The idea that what you do isn’t going to pay for any bills.

The idea that what you do can’t be turned into a real business. I mean a real leveraged business, not simply a money maker.

The idea that if you do try and create any type of income, business, or even try and monetize anything from your efforts that you’ll be shunned and seen as a traitor to whatever community you’re a part of.

The idea that if you do, and can squeeze out anything what so ever, that you’re doomed to making pennies off your efforts, and that anything more substantial or successful is only seen by the very lucky and unreachable few.

The idea that there is only one way to skin it. Only one or two commonly sought after ways of making money of your work. That one must be tied down to little or nothing. Example: Only way to really make anything is to write for a publication, website etc.

Sigh……BIG freakin’ sigh….

I really could go on for some time, but I really must get to the point here. These are things that absolutely drive me out of my beer lovin’ mind. But why?

Because I ladies and gents, know otherwise. And because I know what so many of the amazing people all around you and I are capable of achieving. Let me very briefly explain to you how it is that I know otherwise, and divulge some quick background information about yours truly..aka The Original Beer Bloggin’ Bastard.

I’ll get into far more detail here in upcoming posts, but for the sake of being quick with this, here are my last 8 years in a nutshell. The last 8 years of my life have been what some would say, fanatically devoted to online marketing, advertising, and start ups of every kind, with a huge helping of brilliant (and not so brilliant) craft beer on the side. Where all 8 of those years a smashing good time and a thrilling success? Far from it…or let me put into better perspective…HELL NO!

HOWEVER, some of the more recent years, have seen successes and possibilities that few ever do. I’ve seen failure and misery that few dare to venture into, and I’ve seen success in ways…that once again few dare to venture in to. My experience, my knowledge, my expertise, my acquired skills, my abilities and so forth lay in advertising, marketing, conversions, revenue models, product creation, seeing the big picture and creating a great funnel, and perhaps a tad bit more.

I do wish that a lot my expertise lay in brewing, but as of right now my home brews come out smelling like wet donkey piss with a touch of wet dog…and don’t taste too far from that.

While I’m not attempting to blow my own horn (which does indeed sound dirty by the way, teehehe), I know otherwise. I know that attaining the success that you desire (whatever that may be), especially via the internet, is simply a matter of choice and heading in the direction of that choice.

I do know otherwise, and feel far more qualified to discuss (than certain others), help, teach and be apart of what I hope to be a new direction and shift in perception, understanding, focus, and knowledge with not just beer bloggers, but bloggers, site owners, app developers etc that do the work because they’re in love with it.

Perhaps I’m wrong, but you’ll just have to test me on it all now won’t you?

So here’s whats going on fella’s…

This blog will now be largely, if not almost entirely dedicated to achieving one main objective…

Teaching, helping, drinking great craft beer, changing, supporting, drinking more great beer, and progressing….while drinking incredible beer.

Ok that’s like 5 objectives, but whatever same thing, so sue me. So to make a long story short…

I’m here to help to teach, share, push you and support you in moving into a new perception, and a new reality that I’m willing to bet many of you never really thought possible, or never knew existed. How will we achieve this? I shall start showing you here extremely soon grasshoppers.

And to those who already know me, you know that I’m always around, always answering, and always there. This won’t be something that you take on by yourself. We will all learn together, progress together, share together, be apart of an astounding community, drink great beer together, talk great beer together, and succeed together.

Mind you this isn’t just for those with an existing blog, site, app etc, it’s about helping you to get started if you haven’t already. I’m here for anyone, everywhere, anytime.

Ladies and gentleman…from this day forth…class has begun and is now in session. It’s taken too long for this as is…

You have the passion and the nuts-and-bolts know-how to make this a resounding success, Ilya. I’m looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

And sorry about the camera, but I’m not sure if there’s anyone left who can fix a Super 8 movie camera. You may need to upgrade.

Good luck, my friend.

@Gerard

Thanks so much, I really appreciate all that, and I have to admit, that I would have to fully agree :) .

I think that I’ve gravitated in this direction and am extremely fired up about it (and have been for some time already) was only natural for me. More on all that come though. It’s going to be something really damn good and different than most are used to….or so I believe it will.

I WISH I could film my video’s on a Super 8, that would be epic! Not the greatest choice, but would be mega fun!

Thanks again Gerard!

Like Gerard said, you have what it takes to make this a success. Mindset is everything, and your own thinking can really limit you. Excited to see what you come up with. If you fix your camera that is lol.

p.s. Geek!?! Why you little…yea you’re right ; )

@Billy

Thanks Billy!

There’s no way that I can disagree with that, it is after all what I’m basing a large part of my argument on, but yet it’s so much more than alone. There are so many pieces to the puzzle here, that are actually far more simple when one starts to actually piece them together. Which of course, is something that we’ll get on with here extremely soon, especially since my content delivery frequency is going to shoot through the roof.

On the camera, it’s the cheapest thing that I could find over at Best Buy awhile back so I’ll probably just go pick up another type. The cost of repairs will probably be more than the actual camera. Even if it’s a while before I fix it or get a new one, the written word, graphs, diagrams etc will serve us plenty well until then!

P.S. Do not fret lol, I fully consider myself a geek and not just in beer, but tech (just more hardware based), and especially history and astronomy. Trust me when I say that I can easily and gladly geek out just about anytime. Being a geek is a compliment buddy, it just means that you know your stuff, and are extremely passionate and obsessed about that one particular thing…or group of things. To geekness!

Ilya,

Check out the Kodak Vi8. It’s a Flip-style camera, but you can use memory cards and it has external mike plugs. My wife uses it for her video, and she’s very happy with it. And it’s pretty cheap.

Take a look at the videos on her blog, http://themeparkmom.com/

Thank you so much! It’s a mission indeed I suppose, and thanks on the logo compliment too…I think it goes a good ways to explain my personality and natural oddness :) .

Keep a close eye on everything Dale, because the way I see it…this affects not just all bloggers, but site owners etc….or once again, so I hope lol.

After reading your post, I’m frankly still confused about where the blog is going…but good luck nevertheless! :)

@Josh aka Lost

Then I’m doing my job right….well sorta LOL! I’m trying to give folks an over all idea then dive into the details and get started here in a few days.

But I should work on making things more clear though in future posts, so my apologies!

To make a long story short (the long story is that 1,300 word post above ;) ) I’m taking what is almost a decade of experience, know how, success AND failure in internet marketing, advertising, start ups, conversions, revenue production, profit creation and some more…

…and decking it all out to everyone who wants some of it. :)

I’ve been going out of my mind here as of late with what I’ve been seeing all over not just from beer bloggers, but site owners, app creators etc, and it’s an issue that I’ve been very passionate about for some time now.

The general idea here is that I’m not liking the perception of most that one can’t achieve monetary compensation, only receive very little of it, or can’t build an actual leverage business out of their passion for beer.

I know different, and I intend to teach it, and help anyone that wants to make the choice to head into a different direction and see the other side of things.

For everyone who hasn’t noticed by the way, the site has already changed a little bit, and will transform into an entirely different, and better beast here through the coming days. :)

Hows that?

P.S. Again, sorry for not being as clear as I could have been, seriously do let me know if it’s still a bit too convoluted.

Ilya

I’ll check it out, thank you for the tip! I’ll be shopping for a new camera next week, so I can’t wait. :)

Also, that’s an awesome blog she has there, I know of a few people that would LOVE her blog and its theme. I’ll send it there way.

Thanks again Gerard!

It IS exciting! And we’ll all be starting much sooner than most people probably think. Meaning this isn’t some preemptive post for something that is only going to start two months from now. In a few more days….things will start rolling. Unless I have too many beers and need a recovery period which is always possible ;) .

Ahhh….well beer enthusiasm is a great thing to have, in fact it’s a MUST, but alone is not enough. :)

ALSO….

You never know what you may learn, be witness to, experience, who you might meet, get a chance to drink etc. Stay I would stay tuned. You can never be too well versed ;)

P.S. WHEN were you in Austin and Houston?!?! Just pulled up your last post right now. I would have met you in either city for some great beers and some great discussions! I’m in Dallas right now by the way.

Ilya

SirRon November 30, 2010 at 9:50 pm

…live in Houston, have Texas Longhorn season tix (glad this season is over).

Next time you are in Houston, let me know. Email me (sirron at theferm.org) or drop me a tweet (@sirrong or @theferm).

That last post was only “loosely based” on facts :)

I don’t follow college ball much, but yes…I would be too. Will be happy when the Cowboys season comes to a close here soon. :/

Got your email down, and you probably don’t know me well enough yet, but I will literally drive down to Houston just to meet and share some beers over some great discussions! :) So keep a look out at your inbox, we’ll plan it out here soon!

By the way! On the Divine Reserve…I have a bottle of the Divine Reserve aging right now, have yet to try the “10″ year. Brought two bottles to the Beer Bloggers Conference in Boulder some weeks back, but never got around to trying it myself.

Am really looking forward to it!
